Former Phillie Luke Williams signs minor league deal with NL contender

Former Philadelphia Phillies utilityman Luke Williams has agreed to a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Williams will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training for the defending National League West Champions.

Williams spent parts of the 2021 season with the Phillies, appearing in 58 games and slashing .245/.315/.631. Williams, who also helped Team USA qualify for the Tokyo Olympics earlier that year, played every position except pitcher and catcher for the Phillies.

Williams was designated for assignment the following March. He was traded to San Francisco five days after, appearing in eight games for the Giants while bouncing between Triple-A and the Major Leagues. Williams was DFA’d and traded again in May, to the Miami Marlins, and posted a .603 OPS in 71 games for the Fish.

The Dodgers first claimed the 26-year-old in November. Williams was non-tendered that month and elected free agency before signing the minor league deal back with Los Angeles on Friday.

Though brief, Williams’ Phillies tenure will be remembered for his first career home run: a walk-off shot against the Atlanta Braves in just his second career game (and first career start) on June 9.
