The Phillies provided the following update on Rhys Hoskins Thursday evening:
“Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins underwent an MRI today that revealed a left knee anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear that will require surgery. The recommended surgery is an ACL reconstruction.”
Hoskins suffered the injury in the second inning of a spring training game against the Tigers Thursday afternoon while fielding a ground ball. He dropped back into shallow right field and fell to the ground after taking an awkward step to his left.
It’s a devastating injury that will almost certainly sideline him for the remainder of 2023. He’s scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season.
Hoskins will undergo surgery at a date to be determined.
President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will address reporters in Clearwater tomorrow morning.
