NEW YORK — The Phillies could be without Alec Bohm for the foreseeable future, pending the results of an MRI.
He’s been out of the lineup two of the last three games with a left hamstring injury. Bohm underwent an MRI earlier in the day. The Phillies will know more once they get the results.
The hamstring began acting up again when he fielded a slow roller during Tuesday’s loss against the Mets.
If Bohm needed to go on the injured list, Edmundo Sosa will take over as the everyday third baseman.
Sosa has been essentially relegated to a spot starter role after struggling mightily at the plate through the first two months.
“I think he’s trying to do a little bit too much,” Thomson said about Sosa. “He’s swinging and missing a little bit, especially against right-handed pitching. But I think he also needs to get regular at-bats.”
Kody Clemens will play first base. Darick Hall began his rehab assignment on Tuesday in Clearwater. He’ll play first base on Wednesday, take off on Thursday and continue his rehab assignment at Lehigh Valley on Friday.
In other words, Hall is not quite ready to be an option in the infield if Bohm needs to miss time.
The Phillies do not have another infielder to call up on the 40-man roster. Josh Harrison, who reached base safely for the first time since May 5 in Tuesday’s game, is a bench option who could start games in the infield. The Phillies had Dalton Guthrie taking ground balls at third base during batting practice on Wednesday.
Having Harrison or Guthrie as options in the infield could free up the Phillies to call up either Jake Cave or Símon Muzziotti, who have both hit well this season at Triple A. Cristian Pache, who is out with a meniscus tear, will start rehabbing in extended spring training tomorrow.
It’s been a strange season for Bohm so far. He had an .826 OPS through 25 games, but has a .642 OPS since April 27. Despite that, he’s arguably been their most important run producer. Bohm has a .339/.397/.441 slash line with runners in scoring position.
He’s been a steady hand at first and third base. His presence in the lineup and in the field would be missed, but the Phillies are hoping that it doesn’t get that far.
