Outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. is making the most of his professional debut so far.
The 2022 third-round draft pick is off to a hot start at Low-A Clearwater, showing off his tools from the left-handed batter’s box and earning himself Florida State League Player of the Week honors for his most recent series.
Rincones went 8-for-20 in five games last week against St. Lucie, homering on both Saturday and Sunday to end the series. He slashed .400/.520/.800 in that stretch with two doubles and the two home runs while stealing five bases.
A 6-foot-3 corner outfielder with serious raw power, Rincones has had a tremendous all-around beginning to the season for the Threshers. In 20 games, the 22-year-old has a .930 OPS with four home runs and six doubles. He’s also displayed some notable speed, stealing 13 bases so far this year.
Growing up in Scotland and moving to the United States to play baseball in high school, Rincones went the junior college route before transferring to Florida Atlantic for one year in 2022. The damage he could do at the plate immediately caught the attention of FAU coach John McCormack.
“He hit some balls this year,” McCormack told Phillies Nation last summer, “that you go, ‘Wow. That’s different than all the other 20-year-old guys. That’s different.’”
After not playing in the minors after he was drafted last season due to injury, Rincones is a bit on the older side in Low-A for Clearwater this year as he gets his first taste of pro ball. Still, he’s producing in the opportunity that’s in front of him and showing positive signs as a hitter.
