The Philadelphia Phillies have traded outfielder Dalton Guthrie to the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations, the club announced Thursday evening.
Guthrie had been designated for assignment on June 19, clearing room on the 40-man roster for slugger Darick Hall. Hall was recalled from his rehab assignment Monday after being reinstated from the 60-day injured list. He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies selected Guthrie in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida. Guthrie made his Major League Debut during the 2022 season, and had appeared in 37 total games for the Phillies over two seasons.
In 56 MLB plate appearances, Guthrie slashed .244/.393/.333 with a home run, five RBIs and nine walks. Capable of playing all three outfield positions — and a couple infield spots as well — Guthrie also had four defensive runs saved in limited MLB action.
Guthrie had been putting up strong production in Triple-A prior to being DFA’d, hitting .281 with nine RBIs and an .861 OPS in 22 games.
It’s not hard to see why Gabe Kapler and the Giants were intrigued by Guthrie, especially considering that he still has three remaining minor league options.
