Final Score: Phillies 3, Athletics 2 (12 innings)
For the second time on their current roadtrip, the Philadelphia Phillies found themselves in an extra-inning affair. Wednesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks only lasted 10 innings and saw the Phillies win thanks to a Nick Castellanos sacrifice fly.
This afternoon’s contest against the Oakland Athletics lasted a few innings longer as they played into the 12th inning. And this time it was Kyle Schwarber’s lone hit of the day that drove in the winning run to give the Phillies their fifth win in a row.

The scoring got started in the home half of the fifth inning today. With Matt Strahm — who entered from the bullpen after Cristopher Sánchez started the game by throwing four scoreless innings — pitching for the Phillies, Carlos Pérez opened the frame with a solo home run:
That lead did not last long, however, as Philadelphia tied the game in the top of the sixth.
After back-to-back one-out singles by Trea Turner and Alec Bohm, J.T. Realmuto was intentionally walked to load the bases with two outs in the inning. The A’s walked Realmuto to get to Bryson Stott — a left-handed hitter — with lefty Sam Moll on the mound. That plan didn’t work out, as Stott poked an infield single up the middle to bring a run home:
Tied at one run apiece in the home half of the ninth inning, Philadelphia found themselves in some trouble with Craig Kimbrel on the mound.
With Tony Kemp on first and one out in the inning, Tyler Wade flicked a ball out to right field and Josh Harrison — who pinch-hit for Kody Clemens in the ninth and stayed in the game to play defense — wasn’t able to catch the ball. Kemp advanced all the way to third on the error and the A’s had the winning run 90 feet away, but Kimbrel was able to get out of the jam by striking out the next two batters he faced to send the game to the 10th inning.
Neither team scored in the 10th, but they each scored a run an inning later.
In the top of the 11th, Bryce Harper moved Bohm over to third with a groundout to second base. Then, Oakland walked Realmuto intentionally again to get to Stott and he flied a ball out to left to bring Bohm home to give the Phillies the lead:
In the bottom half of the inning, Andrew Vasquez was in his second inning of work and allowed a one-out double to Pérez, which tied the game:
One batter later, Edmundo Sosa made a great sliding catch in foul territory that helped Vasquez eventually get out of the inning:
Sosa started the 12th with a sacrifice fly that moved Cristian Pache over to third. Schwarber then singled up the middle to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead:
Right-hander Jeff Hoffman pitched the bottom of the 12th for the Phillies and was able to get around a leadoff sacrifice bunt to close the game out.
