For the second time in as many years, Noah Syndergaard has been traded to a contender hoping to bolster their rotation.

According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, Syndergaard has been traded by the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cleveland Guardians. In return, the Dodgers will receive Syndergaard’s former New York Mets teammate Amed Rosario, per Jeff Passan and Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

It’s been a trying season for Syndergaard, who has struggled after signing a one-year/$13 million deal with the Dodgers in the offseason. In 12 starts, Syndergaard is 1-4 with a 7.16 ERA and a 5.54 FIP. He hasn’t started at the MLB level since June 7, as he has dealt with a blister on his right index finger.

A year ago, the Philadelphia Phillies acquired Syndergaard in a trade that sent former No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak to the Los Angeles Angels. He went 5-2 with a 4.12 ERA and 3.66 FIP in 10 games, nine of which were starts. He was hardly a star, but Syndergaard still proved to be a useful addition to a team that eventually reached the World Series.

Syndergaard will celebrate his 31st birthday next month, so he’s still not that old. But he’s looked nothing like the flame-thrower that spent parts of six seasons with the New York Mets since undergoing Tommy John surgery in March of 2020. As recently as 2019, Syndergaard averaged 97.9 mph on his fastball. But in 2023, Syndergaard’s fastball is averaging 92.8 mph, down noticeably even from the 94.5 he averaged a season ago.
