Phillies select HS infielder Aidan Miller in first round of MLB draft

The Philadelphia Phillies continued their trend of taking high schoolers early in the draft on Sunday.

The team made Aidan Miller, an infielder out of J.W. Mitchell High School in Florida, their first-round selection in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft with the 27th overall pick.

Miller, a right-handed hitter with tons of raw power, played shortstop for most of his high school career but has shifted over to third base recently. The bat should be able to play at one of the corner infield positions. Miller is an Arkansas commit and the brother of Reds prospect Jackson Miller.

Miller is the fourth straight high schooler taken in the first round since Phillies amateur scouting director Brian Barber took over, starting with the 2020 draft. Philadelphia selected two prep pitchers in Mick Abel and Andrew Painter being chosen in 2020 and 2021, respectively, and high school outfielder Justin Crawford last year.

Miller was the team’s only selection on Day 1 of the draft, when the first and second rounds take place. The Phillies lost their second- and fifth-round picks when they signed Trea Turner this past winter.

MLB draft Day 2, which includes Rounds 3-10, begins Monday at 2 p.m. Eastern. The Phillies have picks in the third round (No. 98 overall), fourth round (No. 130), sixth round (No. 193), seventh round (No. 223), eighth round (No. 253), ninth round (No. 283) and 10th round (No. 313).
