The Phillies are adding one of their top prospects to the major league roster.
They are calling up center fielder Johan Rojas, according to Mike Rodriguez. Matt Gelb of The Athletic confirmed the report and added that Drew Ellis is expected to be added to the active roster. Rojas is replacing Cristian Pache, who is expected to go on the injured list with what Gelb reports as a “minor injury.” Ellis is replacing Josh Harrison, who was placed on the 10-day IL with a wrist injury on July 12.
The right-handed hitting Rojas, 22, should get some at-bats against left-handed pitching. He’s slashing .306/.361/.484 with nine home runs, 45 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in 76 games in 2023. Like Pache, Rojas plays an elite center field. That skill set, along with the fact that Rojas bats right-handed is probably the reason the Phillies went with him over the left-handed hitting SÃmon Muzziotti, who has been tearing it up all season for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
He could start both games of Saturday’s doubleheader. Left-hander Blake Snell will start game one while Ryan Weathers, another lefty, is expected to be recalled and start game two.
Ellis, 27, is slashing .237/.348/.525 in 31 games for Lehigh Valley this season. Scott Kingery and Weston Wilson, two other right-handed infielders swinging hot bats, are not on the 40-man roster.
