The Phillies’ Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker, J.T. Realmuto and Bryson Stott were named National League Gold Glove Award finalists at their respective positions.
Realmuto is seeking his second straight Gold Glove Award and the third of his career.
Stott’s nomination was anticipated. He excelled in his first full season as a second baseman, posting a +7 defensive runs saved and +16 outs above average. All three nominees for the Gold Glove Award at second base in the National League, Stott, the Padres Ha-Seong Kim and the Cubs’ Nico Hoerner, all transitioned to second base full-time in 2023.
Wheeler or Walker could become the first Phillies pitcher to win a Gold Glove Award since Steve Carlton in 1981. Carlton, Jim Kaat (1976 and 1977) and Bobby Shantz (1964) are the only Phillies pitchers to win the award.
2009 was the last year multiple Phillies won a Gold Glove Award. Jimmy Rollins won the award at shortstop and Shane Victorino took home honors in the outfield.
Ranger Suárez does not qualify for the award because “all pitchers must have pitched in at least 138 innings by his team’s 138th game,” according to Rawlings’ website. Suárez threw 125 innings during the 2023 regular season. Fifty-four starting pitchers qualified for the award.
All 30 managers and six coaches on each major league team vote for the award. Ballots are usually distributed in the beginning of September.
The winners of the award will be unveiled on ESPN’s “Baseball Tonight” on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
