Former Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen has agreed to a one-year/$5 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates for 2024, according to Jason Mackey of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. This upcoming campaign will be McCutchen’s 16th MLB season.
The former NL MVP spent parts of three years with the Phillies from 2019-2021, slashing .237/.343/.444 with 47 home runs, 143 RBIs and a .787 OPS after signing a three-year/$50 million free-agent deal.
But while McCutchen has had stints with the Phillies, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers, the overwhelming majority of his career success has come with the Pirates.
Pittsburgh took McCutchen with the 11th overall pick in the 2005 MLB Draft, and he spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Buccos, making six All-Star Game appearances.
After spending a half decade away from Pittsburgh, McCutchen returned to the Pirates in 2023 on a one-year deal. He was pretty productive across 112 games, slashing .256/.378/.397 with 12 home runs, 43 RBIs, 75 walks and a .776 OPS.
The 37-year-old will return to the Pirates with 299 career home runs, 12th among active players. If 2024 is his final season, getting to hit his 300th career home run in a Pirates uniform should be a cool moment for McCutchen.
