The Philadelphia Phillies have traded outfielder Jake Cave to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash considerations, the club announced. Matt Gelb of The Athletic was first to report the trade earlier this morning.
Cave, a left-handed hitter, was in competition this spring for the fourth and final spot on the Phillies’ bench. With Cave now on the move, Cristian Pache or someone else will likely be on Philadelphia’s bench on Opening Day. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are on the lookout for a left-handed hitting outfielder, which means Pache isn’t a lock to break camp with the Phillies.
Cave hit .212/.272/.348 in 203 plate appearances for the Phillies last season after raking at Triple-A Lehigh Valley where he posted a 1.113 OPS with 16 home runs and 30 doubles in 275 trips to the plate. In 31 plate appearances for the Phillies this spring, Cave slashed .333/.355/.433.
The 31-year-old Cave spoke with our own Tim Kelly not too long ago about what it’s like being on the fringes of a roster during spring training. Cave was open about the fact that he may not make the Phillies’ Opening Day roster saying, “…if they don’t value me on the roster and somebody else does, that’s what it is.”
