Phillies Injury Updates: Turnbull, Hays to play in Lehigh Valley this weekend

The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Austin Hays (kidney infection)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Hays was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 2) on Sept. 5 with a kidney infection. Cal Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster.
  • Hays will begin a short minor league rehab assignment on Saturday, Sept. 21. He will DH Saturday, play left field on Sunday, recover on Monday and could be activated prior to Tuesday’s game against the Cubs. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 20)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Turnbull last pitched in a game on June 26 at Detroit. He experienced a setback in mid-August, but is now trying to ramp up in an attempt to make a 2024 comeback as a reliever.
  • Turnbull will pitch two innings in Lehigh Valley on Sunday, then will return to Clearwater, Fla. and continue to pitch in simulated games. The Ironpigs’ regular season schedule ends on Sunday.
  • Will he have enough time to make a contribution this year? “I don’t know,” Rob Thomson said. “It all depends on how he looks and how he feels. I’m really not sure.” (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 20)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list; Expected back in 2025
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter threw another live batting practice on Sept. 9 in Clearwater, Fla. (Last Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 10)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)

    Dahl does not appear to be the answer long term, the larger the sample size the poorer the outcome. Although he is an outfielder which we need. If Clemens or Sosa can prove they can play the outfield then he is expendable.

    Bring up our best power hitting outfielder in the minors until the AS game and let’s see what he got.

      Muzziotti was spectacular last year, but this year he is hitting around. 200 and not doing as well

    It’s frustrating to view 10 plus Philies strike out practically every game. Why is that?

    Johnson down and Kingery up. Going to lose him anyway and you might as well get some use out of him
