Final Score: Phillies 2, Brewers 1 (10 innings)

The Phillies, after struggling to get much going against a talented Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff, finally came through late in the game.

On the first pitch from Brewers reliever Joel Payamps in the bottom of the tenth, Nick Castellanos laced a double the opposite way to secure a series victory against the NL Central-leading Brewers.

Alec Bohm tied the game in the eighth inning on a solo home run deep into left center field. It was the first home run allowed by Brewers late-inning reliever Elvis Peguero this season and first home run hit by Bohm since May 19.

Prior to Bohm’s game-tying home run, the Phillies left 11 men on base. The top of the order, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto and Bryce Harper, combined to go 2-for-11 with three walks and five strikeouts.

William Contreras and Christian Yelich hit back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth, but Matt Strahm was able to bear down and retire the Brewers 1-2-3. The same fans who applauded Rhys Hoskins for a second straight night booed him loudly in his at-bat with two on and one out. Hoskins struck out looking and Gary Sánchez flew out to center to end the inning.

Cristopher Sánchez kept the ball on the ground, allowing one run through six innings and inducing 11 groundouts and none in the air. He’s proving to be one of the best starters in MLB this season. He has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts and eight of his last 10. His season ERA is down to 2.71, which ranks 12th in the majors.

Highlights

  • Dahl nearly had his second home run in as many days.
  • After a nine-pitch at-bat by Christian Yelich, Willy Adames swung at the first pitch and hit into a double play to end the top of the fourth inning. The ball took an unusual bounce at third, but Alec Bohm was able to snare it.
  • Bohm crushed a high fastball to tie the game in the eighth.
  • J.T. Realmuto, you are the man. Brice Turang grounded a ball right to Bryson Stott at second, who threw a seed to Realmuto to get Oliver Dunn at the plate. Realmuto took some contact just an inning removed from taking a foul ball to the groin.
  • Castellanos secured the victory with a hard-hit line drive to right field.

Notes

  • Castellanos’ walk-off double in the tenth was his fifth-career walk-off hit.
  • The win in 10 innings snaps a three-game losing streak in extra-inning games. The Phillies are 5-6 in extra-inning games.
  • This is only the second time the Milwaukee Brewers have lost this season while leading after seven innings. They are now 28-2 when leading after seven. The Phillies are now 4-12 when trailing after seven innings.
  • Schwarber is now 1-for-15 with seven strikeouts in June.
  • The unearned run allowed in extras on May 28 in San Francisco officially snapped Strahm’s scoreless streak, but he still hasn’t allowed an earned run in 25 games. A lot has happened since then.
