Nola hit hard as Phillies drop series to Red Sox

“Fenway Nola” was a thing. The Phillies right-hander entered Thursday with two career starts in Boston, allowing just three total runs and eight total hits in 15 innings.

It may not be a thing anymore. Notably on eight days of rest because of the London trip, Nola allowed eight runs and 11 hits, each tying career-highs, in 3 2/3 innings in Thursday’s rubber match. He struck out just two of the 23 batters he faced.

His second of two four-run innings stretched the lead to 8-3 in the fourth, and things held pretty much steady from there. The Phillies dropped their third consecutive true road series and fell to 46-22.

Highlights

  • Back-to-back doubles put the Red Sox up in the second. A single put them up two. Another set of back-to-back doubles stretched the lead to four. This all happened consecutively.
  • The Phillies got nearly all of it back in the fourth, when the bottom of the lineup loaded the bases and Kyle Schwarber cleared them.
  • The Red Sox actually did get all of those back, though, and then some — immediately. Despite having two outs and a man on first with no runs in, a walk, single and Tyler O’Neill’s 12th homer gave the Red Sox an 8-3 lead.
  • Johan Rojas threw Enmanuel Valdez out at third on an RBI double to end the sixth, but other than that, there were no more highlights.

Notes

  • Nola’s ERA jumped from 2.77 to 3.48.
  • Everyone in the Red Sox lineup had at least one hit. Five of them had multiple.
  • For some good news: Schwarber went 3-for-4 with that double and a walk. June Schwarber took a few games to kick into full gear, but he’s 8-for-15 with two homers, a double and four walks in his last four.
  • This is fun, at least.
