Phillies activate Brandon Marsh ahead of Saturday’s game vs. Orioles

The Philadelphia Phillies announced Saturday afternoon that they’ve activated outfielder Brandon Marsh from the 10-day injured list ahead of the second game in their weekend series with the Baltimore Orioles. Marsh will hit seventh and play left field in his first game back with the Phillies.

In a corresponding move, the Phillies optioned INF/OF Weston Wilson to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to clear a spot on the 26-man roster for Marsh.

It marks a pretty quick return from the injured list for Marsh, who was placed on the 10-day IL back on June 3 with a right hamstring strain. All indications at the time were that it was a very mild strain for Marsh, with manager Rob Thomson even joking that it was “a half” when asked what grade the strain was.

Marsh made two rehab appearances with Double-A Reading, DHing Thursday and playing center field Friday. Marsh recorded four hits across eight rehab at-bats, and scored two runs.

Optioning Wilson delays what will be a more interesting roster decision in terms of who will leave the 26-man roster when shortstop Trea Turner returns from his hamstring injury, which is expected in the coming days.

Cristian Pache and David Dahl both are out of minor-league options, so they would have to be designated for assignment to be removed from the 26-man roster. There’s a good chance either would be claimed on waivers if DFA’d and the Phillies would lose them.

However, Johan Rojas could be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and the Phillies could use a combination of Marsh and Pache in center field if they chose to do that. Thomson said Friday that there wasn’t any significance to Marsh playing in center field, as opposed to left field, in his rehab assignment. That may soon be tested.
