The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Ranger Suárez (low back soreness)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 with low back soreness, retroactive to July 24.
  • Per Rob Thomson, Suárez threw a bullpen session and a two-inning simulated game on Tuesday at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies’ manager said the left-hander threw a total of 60 pitches with his fastball sitting 90-91 mph. Suárez’s next rehab outing will come on Sunday. Where he’ll make that outing is not yet known, according to Thomson. It could come at Triple-A Lehigh Valley or in the form of another simulated game Citizens Bank Park. • Austin Hays (left hamstring strain)
  • Status: 10-day injured list
  • Hays was removed from the Wednesday, Aug. 7 game against the Dodgers in the top of the third after he appeared to tweak his hamstring running down the first base line.
  • The Phillies placed Hays on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, retroactive to Aug. 8. Hays hit in the cage on Tuesday and is scheduled for some light defensive work, too. (Last updated by Bailey Digh on Aug. 13)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 15-day injured list, out 6-8 weeks
  • Turnbull will be out until August with a right lat strain. He was lifted from his start against the Detroit Tigers after three innings on June 26 with right shoulder soreness. He expressed optimism about his status to reporters in Detroit after the game, but testing revealed a more significant injury.
  • According to NBC Sports Philadelphia‘s Corey Seidman, the Phillies plan to utilize Turnbull out of the bullpen when he returns, relaying a quote from manager Rob Thomson who says “we’ll stretch him out as much as we can but it would be tough to get him to 100 pitches.”
  • Thomson said Turnbull will start playing catch “hopefully by the end of the week.” (Last updated by Bailey Digh on Aug. 13).

  • Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list; Currently on rehab assignment
  • As of Aug. 9, Covey has made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His last came on Aug. 4, when he allowed one earned run over three innings for Reading against Hartford. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 9)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter is throwing 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He’s only throwing fastballs and changeups currently. Thomson didn’t rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which are a controlled setting — before the end of the year. However, he doesn’t believe he’ll be pitching for an affiliate at any point in 2024. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29)

Dahl does not appear to be the answer long term, the larger the sample size the poorer the outcome. Although he is an outfielder which we need. If Clemens or Sosa can prove they can play the outfield then he is expendable.

It’s frustrating to view 10 plus Philies strike out practically every game. Why is that?
