The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • Ranger Suárez (lower back soreness)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Suárez was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 27 with low back soreness, retroactive to July 24.
  • Suárez threw a simulated game on Aug. 17 at Citizens Bank Park. He threw 57 pitches over four frames, and another 20 in the bullpen. His velocity sat around 91 mph, which the Phillies are happy with in a sim game. If Suárez comes out of the sim game feeling well, manager Rob Thomson says “there’s a good chance we could get him back in Kansas City.” The Phillies will play the Royals Aug. 23-25. • Austin Hays (left hamstring strain)
  • Status: 10-day injured list
  • The Phillies placed Hays on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, retroactive to Aug. 8.
  • Hays hit against Suárez during the sim game on Aug. 17. He homered in the first inning, and ran well, including doing some first-to-thirds. Thomson said “there’s a chance he does a rehab assignment for a couple days.” Thomson responded “potentially, yeah” when asked if Hays could also come back during the Kansas City series. (Last updated by Tim Kelly on Aug. 17)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • To make room for Tyler Gilbert on the 40-man roster, RHP Spencer Turnbull was moved to the 60-day injured list in Aug. 17. However, Thomson did point out that since Turnbull initially went on the IL on June 27, being transferred to the 60-day IL doesn’t preclude him from pitching again this season.
  • In fact, Thomson said that the plan for Turnbull is continue his throwing program at some point this upcoming week, adding that he’s “feeling a lot better” since experiencing a setback in his recovery from a right lat strain. (Last updated by Tim Kelly on Aug. 17)

  • Dylan Covey (right shoulder strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list; Currently on rehab assignment
  • As of Aug. 9, Covey has made three rehab appearances for Single-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. His last came on Aug. 4, when he allowed one earned run over three innings for Reading against Hartford. (Last updated by Destiny Lugardo on Aug. 9)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter is throwing 25-pitch bullpens every Tuesday and Friday. He’s only throwing fastballs and changeups currently. Thomson didn’t rule out the 21-year-old pitching in simulated games — which are a controlled setting — before the end of the year. However, he doesn’t believe he’ll be pitching for an affiliate at any point in 2024. (Updated by Tim Kelly on June 29)

Dahl does not appear to be the answer long term, the larger the sample size the poorer the outcome. Although he is an outfielder which we need. If Clemens or Sosa can prove they can play the outfield then he is expendable.

Muzziotti was spectacular last year, but this year he is hitting around. 200 and not doing as well

It’s frustrating to view 10 plus Philies strike out practically every game. Why is that?
