David Dahl has returned to the Philadelphia Phillies organization on a minor-league contract, according to MLB.com‘s Todd Zolecki. Tom Housenick of The Morning Call says that Dahl will be active for Triple-A Lehigh Valley when they return to play on Tuesday.
The Phillies designated Dahl for assignment on July 8, when both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber returned from the injured list. Dahl ultimately cleared waivers, and elected free agency on July 10. Evidently, he didn’t find any better opportunities in free agency, and is now back with a Phillies organization that maintained throughout the process that they hoped to keep the 30-year-old in some form.
While Dahl had some initial success when his contract was purchased from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in early June, the former All-Star struck out nine times over three games during the final road trip before he was DFA’d. In total, he hit .207 with three home runs, eight RBIs, 21 strikeouts and a .638 OPS in 19 games with the Phillies.
Prior to being promoted by the Phillies, Dahl had put together an excellent season for the IronPigs, hitting .340 with 12 home runs, 26 RBIs and a 1.076 OPS at Triple-A. He’ll now return to that level and look to once again earn an opportunity at the majors with the Phillies.
