Former Phillies infielder Jean Segura is back in professional baseball.

The 12-year major-league veteran signed a minor-league contract with the Baltimore Orioles, the club announced Friday. The key member of the 2022 National League-champion Phillies hasn’t played since the 2023 trade deadline.

Segura, 34, is a contact-oriented second baseman with 1,545 career hits under his belt with six different teams. He spent four years in Philadelphia following a trade from the Mariners before the 2019 season. Segura struggled in his first year with the team as he played shortstop, but an eventual move to second and better production from his right-handed bat helped him find his footing.

After failing to make the postseason for the first 10 years of his career, Segura and the Phillies finally cracked the playoffs in 2022, and he quickly made his mark. His game-winning single in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series was the first of many memorable moments in Philadelphia’s unforgettable run to the World Series.

The Phillies parted ways with Segura after that season as they signed star shortstop Trea Turner and moved Bryson Stott to second base. Segura signed a two-year deal with the Marlins for 2023, but hit only .219 in 85 games. He was traded to Cleveland in a deal that sent Josh Bell to Miami last August and was released once the trade became official.

Segura hasn’t played a game at any level since then, but he’ll now join an Orioles organization that has acquired several former Phillies recently in Craig Kimbrel, Seranthony Domínguez, Cristian Pache — who was later designated for assignment and is currently with the Marlins — and Gregory Soto.
