Here is some good news on José Alvarado: The Phillies are expected to activate him off the restricted list following Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. He was back in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon and will likely throw off the mound on Saturday. He will presumably be available out of the bullpen starting Sunday.
Alvarado was placed on the restricted list prior to Monday’s game against the Houston Astros due to a personal matter. He will address the media on Saturday.
Alvarado has a 4.30 ERA in 56 appearances with the Phillies this season. Rosters expand from 26 to 28 players on Sunday and if the Phillies activate Alvarado after Saturday’s game, it’s likely the Phillies would send down a reliever currently in the bullpen and call up Tuesday’s starter against Toronto on Sunday and have him be the 14th pitcher on the roster. The Phillies haven’t revealed who their starter will be on Tuesday, but it could be Tyler Phillips, who is eligible to be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday.
