The Latest Phillies Injury Updates

  • J.T. Realmuto (sore left knee)
  • Status: Out of the lineup
  • Realmuto fouled a ball off his left knee in the second inning during a game on Sept. 6 in Miami. He remained in the game until being pinch-hit for in the top of the fourth inning. The Phillies announced Realmuto was removed from the game with a left knee bruise.
  • Realmuto is making progress, but while the swelling in his left knee is coming down, there’s still enough that he wasn’t able to catch a bullpen on Sept. 9, per Rob Thomson. The manager then guessed Realmuto will be back for this weekend’s series against the New York Mets, but left open the possibility it will be sooner. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 9)

  • Alec Bohm (left hand strain)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • After six days of keeping him on the active roster with the belief he wouldn’t need an injured list stint, the Phillies placed Bohm on the 10-day IL with a left hand strain Friday. The move is retroactive to Sept. 3, as the maximum you can backdate an IL stint is three days. Infielder Buddy Kennedy has been recalled.
  • Bohm took ground balls and was doing some dry swings on Sept. 9, with the hope being that he would also do “some tee and toss today,” per Thomson. The manager added that he’s “not concerned” that Bohm won’t have enough time to get back in rhythm before the playoffs, assuming the Phillies get there. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 9)

  • Austin Hays (kidney infection)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Hays was placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 2) on Sept. 5 with a kidney infection. Cal Stevenson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster.
  • Hays came in Sunday and did both his throwing program and a lower-body workout. Hays is progressing but described his legs as still feeling “heavy.” Even once Hays is feeling back to normal, he’s going to have to build back up towards game shape. Thomson said of Hays “it’s gonna be a while.” (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 9)

  • Edmundo Sosa (back spasms)
  • Status: 10-day IL
  • Edmundo Sosa was placed on the 10-day IL with back spasms prior to the Sunday, Sept. 8 game against the Marlins. The move is retroactive to Sept. 7. Seth Johnson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take his spot on the roster. Johnson will start Sunday’s series finale against the Marlins.
  • According to Thomson, Sosa’s back is “still sore.” But Thomson said he doesn’t believe the infielder will need more than 10 days on the IL. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 9)

  • Andrew Painter (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: Minor league 60-day injured list; Expected back in 2025
  • The No. 1 overall prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system underwent Tommy John surgery on July 25, 2023.
  • Painter threw to batters for the first time since his major league spring training debut on March 1, 2023, according to Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer. He reportedly sat 97-98 mph with his fastball and touched 99 in the 15-pitch live batting practice session, which took place in Clearwater, Fla. Thomson told reporters in Toronto that the next step is for him to throw another live BP session on Saturday, Sept 7. He’ll continue to throw every three days for the time being if all goes well. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on Sept. 5)

  • Spencer Turnbull (right lat strain)
  • Status: 60-day injured list
  • Turnbull is throwing up to 120 feet this week. Thomson noted on Aug. 28 that if Turnbull does return this season, it will be as a reliever, because there just isn’t enough time remaining for him to build up and start against.
  • Turnbull will throw a bullpen this week. The Phillies remain hopeful, but non-committal on whether the righty will make it back this season. (Updated by Tim Kelly on Sept. 1)

  • Luis Ortiz (Tommy John surgery)
  • Status: 15-day injured list
  • Ortiz underwent successful Tommy John surgery on July 11. (Updated by Destiny Lugardo on July 12)

Dahl does not appear to be the answer long term, the larger the sample size the poorer the outcome. Although he is an outfielder which we need. If Clemens or Sosa can prove they can play the outfield then he is expendable.

Bring up our best power hitting outfielder in the minors until the AS game and let’s see what he got.

Muzziotti was spectacular last year, but this year he is hitting around. 200 and not doing as well

It’s frustrating to view 10 plus Philies strike out practically every game. Why is that?

Johnson down and Kingery up. Going to lose him anyway and you might as well get some use out of him
