Phillies make minor roster move before Saturday’s game

The Philadelphia Phillies made a minor roster move prior to Saturday evening’s game against the Washington Nationals, optioning RHP Tyler Phillips to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and promoting LHP Tyler Gilbert.

To make room for Gilbert on the 40-man roster, RHP Spencer Turnbull was moved to the 60-day injured list. However, manager Rob Thomson did point out that since Turnbull initially went on the IL on June 27, being transferred to the 60-day IL doesn’t preclude him from pitching again this season.

In fact, Thomson said that the plan for Turnbull is continue his throwing program at some point this upcoming week, adding that he’s “feeling a lot better” since experiencing a setback in his recovery from a right lat strain.

Gilbert, 30, appeared in 30 games for the Arizona Diamondbacks between 2021 and 2023, 13 of which were starts. The most notable moment in Gilbert’s career to this point came on Aug. 15, 2021, when he tossed a no-hitter in his first MLB start.

Gilbert will serve as a long-man in the Phillies bullpen for the time being, with Thomson noting that he’s been stretched out to three innings. Since being acquired by the Phillies in a May trade with the Cincinnati Reds, Gilbert has been excellent at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 4-0 with a 2.06 ERA over 27 appearances.

Phillips — a Lumberton, New Jersey native — lived out the dreams of every person who grew up rooting for the Phillies when he tossed a complete-game shutout against the Cleveland Guardians on July 27. However, since then, Phillips has allowed 17 earned runs across just 11 innings pitched over three starts.

As for who will start Tuesday’s series opener in Atlanta in what would have been Phillips’ spot, Thomson said the Phillies haven’t yet decided whether they’ll bump Zack Wheeler up a day (it would still be the normal rest of four days) or go with a bullpen game against the Braves.
