Here’s another unfortunate injury scare for the Phillies.

Designated hitter Kyle Schwarber was lifted in the bottom of the fourth inning of Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays for pinch hitter Buddy Kennedy.

The Phillies say it was due to “left elbow discomfort.”

Schwarber went 1-for-1 with a home run and a walk before being lifted from the game. His first-inning home run set a new major league record for most leadoff home runs in a single season with 14.

Manager Rob Thomson said after the game that Schwarber is day-to-day. The injury occurred in the bottom of the third inning as Schwarber dived back to first base on a back-pick. Schwarber did not initially think much of it as he wasn’t in a lot of pain, but he went back to the cages inside and tried to take a swing. He reported discomfort to the trainers. The elbow got better with some treatment, but when he tried to take another swing, he felt it again.

He’ll play tomorrow if the discomfort subsides.

“There’s nothing structurally wrong, so pretty much tomorrow, if [I] can stand it, [I’ll] play,” Schwarber said.
