Another day, another leadoff Schwarbomb.
On a 1-0 pitch, Kyle Schwarber crushed a middle-middle fastball from Rays starter Taj Bradley to right-center field to give the Phillies an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
It was a record-breaking hit. With the home run, Schwarber now has 14 leadoff home runs this season. That’s a new single-season major league record. He tied Alfonso Soriano’s record of 13 in 2003 with his leadoff home run on Sept. 4 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
After a tough August, Schwarber is on fire. He has homered seven times this month, including three times in a thrilling 10-9 comeback against Toronto on Sept. 3. His sixth-inning home run in Monday’s game broke up a no-hitter and gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
Schwarber, after the home run, is now batting .400 with a 1.000 slugging percentage in September.
Schwarber has 45 leadoff home runs in his career. Thirty-two have come in a Phillies uniform.
He was later removed from the game in the fourth inning with what the Phillies called “left elbow discomfort.”
