Prior to the second game in their series against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they’ve activated infielder Edmundo Sosa from the 10-day injured list, and optioned infielder Buddy Kennedy to Triple-A Lehigh Valley to clear room on the 28-man roster.
For Sosa, it was, as expected, a brief absence as he recovered from back spasms. Tuesday was the first day the 28-year-old infielder was eligible to return from the IL, and he is back after playing in a pair of rehab games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley over the weekend.
Sosa has been a valuable utility infielder for the Phillies this season, with seven home runs, a .756 OPS and six defensive runs saved across three positions in 2024. He’s also proven to be a valuable presence in terms of the energy he provides for the team since being acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals in July of 2022.
Meanwhile, Kennedy will head back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after looking like a capable MLB bench option himself in a short sample size, driving in two runs and drawing two walks in seven games. Kennedy was a feel-good story, because the 25-year-old grew up in Millville, New Jersey rooting for the Phillies. He just caught up in a numbers game, as the Phillies have proven to have a surplus of quality utility players in their organization.
