Final Score: Brewers 6, Phillies 2
Well, this definitely wasn’t how the Phillies wanted to start their roadtrip.
The Fightins out-hit the Brewers, 11 to eight, but they simply couldn’t get those baserunners home. Overall, the Phillies went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left seven men on base.
Meanwhile, Ranger Suárez has given up seven runs and 16 hits over 10 1/3 innings in his last two starts. His velocity was up tonight, but he walked three batters and he has gone a mere 2-5 since July. It’s unclear how much of a role the Phillies will be able to count on Suárez taking down in the postseason.
Even with the loss, the Phillies are still 90-60, 30 games above .500. Their magic number remains at five by virtue of a New York Mets win, but clinching the NL East title at some point this week is very much in play.
Highlights
- Kyle Schwarber just missed a home run on the first pitch of the game. It had the distance, but went foul.
- William Contreras gave the Brewers a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third with an RBI double. Joey Ortiz extended that lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.
- Brandon Marsh sent his 16th home run of the season over the center field wall in the top of the fifth to make it 3-1 Brewers:
- Once Suárez left the game, the Brewers had a productive bottom of the sixth off of José Alvarado. Joey Ortiz had an RBI triple and Brice Turang brought Ortiz home with a single:
Notes
- Suárez only allowed four hits, but two of his three walked batters scored.
