Two Phillies legends are set to receive a special honor next month.
Chase Utley and Ryan Howard will be inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place on Nov. 7 at the Event Center at Live! Casino and Hotel in South Philly.
Other members of the Class of 2024, which was announced back in April, include Saint Joseph’s University basketball legend Jameer Nelson, Flyers great Rod Brind’Amour and the late Eddie Stanky, a Northeast Philly native who played 11 seasons in the big leagues and managed the Cardinals, White Sox and Rangers.
Past Phillies inductees from the 2008 World Series championship winning team include Carlos Ruiz (2023), Jimmy Rollins (2022) and Charlie Manuel (2016).
The Philly Sports Hall of Fame should be the first of many local honors for the legendary Phillies infielders. Utley, Howard and Rollins are locks to one day go on the Phillies Wall of Fame.
Utley has a real chance at being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame within the next few years. He is entering his second year on the ballot in 2025. Howard fell off the ballot in his only year of eligibility in 2022. Rollins is entering his fourth year on the ballot.
Will all three of Utley, Rollins and Howard eventually have their numbers retired by the Phillies? All three numbers — 6, 11 and 26 — are out of circulation, but it’s unclear if managing partner John Middleton will modify the franchise’s loose policy of only retiring numbers of players who earn election into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
