With the World Series still going on, major-league free agency hasn’t opened. But clubs can sign players to minor-league contracts. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, the Phillies have done just that by signing right-handed reliever Cody Stashak to a minor-league deal.

Stashak, a 30-year-old from Somers Point, NJ, spent 2024 with the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. He appeared in 27 games for the River Cats, pitching 36 1/3 innings with a 5.45 ERA. Stashak struck out 44 hitters and walked 12. The righty relies on a low 90s fastball and low 80s slider.

Stashak was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 13th round of the 2015 MLB Draft out of St. John’s University. He graduated from Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing, NJ.

Stashak was with the Twins organization for seven years, appearing in 55 games for the big-league club between 2019 and 2022. The right-hander has a career 4.13 ERA in the majors across 72 innings.

Great Move… There is someone who is going to make the difference, we don’t have anyone like him in the minors … Wrong
