Tom McCarthy has seen a lot in his career as a broadcaster. He’s probably witnessed his fair share of spectator fights in the stands from the broadcast booth at Citizens Bank Park, but nothing quite like the one he saw while broadcasting the VCU-Saint Louis college basketball game at Chaifetz Arena in Missouri on Tuesday night.
With the Saint Louis Billikens leading 69-63 with 1:10 left in the second half, a brawl broke out between at least a dozen people near the VCU bench. Video shows a VCU fan being dragged down a row of seats. Police and public safety officials broke up the brawl that delayed the game by seven minutes.
“This has been a solid college basketball game and there’s no need to have this happen at the end,” McCarthy, who was calling the game for CBS Sports, said.
The game resumed and Saint Louis defeated their Atlantic 10 rivals VCU 78-69.
In addition to his duties as the Phillies’ play-by-play television announcer, McCarthy broadcasts NFL and college basketball games for CBS as well as NFL games on radio for Westwood One. McCarthy and his broadcast partner Ross Tucker called the Eagles-Packers wild card round game on national radio for Westwood One.
