The Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday announced cap selections for the five new members scheduled to be inducted as part of the Class of 2025.
Legendary slugger Dick Allen will posthumously enter the Hall with a Phillies cap on his plaque. Allen, who played with the Phillies for nine years, was elected to the Hall of Fame on Dec. 8, 2024 via the Classic Baseball Era Committee.
The 1964 National League Rookie-of-the-Year, Allen batted .292 with a .912 OPS over his 15-year career with the Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics. Long considered one of the best players who wasn’t in the Hall of Fame, Allen will be honored on July 27, 2025 in Cooperstown, N.Y.
As Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted, Allen is the first player to go into the Hall of Fame with a Phillies P on his plaque since Jim Bunning in 1996. The next one could be Chase Utley, who received 39.8% of the vote on the most recent ballot. He is on track to eventually reach the 75% threshold needed for election. Utley would be the first Phillie to enter the Hall of Fame with the current Phillies logo (1992-) on his plaque.
The 2025 ceremony marks the first time in 25 years that multiple former Phillies will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in the same class. Billy Wagner, who was elected on his 10th and final year on the BBWAA ballot, chose to go in with a Houston Astros logo on his cap. Wagner played two seasons with the Phillies from 2004 to 2005.
Of course, Ichiro Suzuki will go in with a Seattle Mariners logo on his cap. Dave Parker, who was elected with Allen on the committee, will go in as a Pittsburgh Pirate. The only real toss-up here was CC Sabathia, who chose to go in as a New York Yankee.
