The Phillies have signed infielder Christian Arroyo to a minor-league contract, according to Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors. He’ll get a non-roster invite to spring training.
Arroyo hasn’t lived up to his billing as a once-top-100 prospect, but he’s been serviceable at times. After being traded from San Francisco, he bounced around the Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Boston and Milwaukee organizations, his best years coming with the Red Sox in 2021 and 2022. He hit .277 with a .749 OPS and accumulated 2.2 bWAR across 144 games those seasons.
Arroyo struggled in 2023 with the Red Sox, then again last year with the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate. He didn’t appear in a big-league game last season.
He’s played every infield position, with the bulk of his minors work at shortstop and most of his MLB time at second. He’s been a good defender at second, at 12 Defensive Runs Saved in over 1,300 innings, although Outs Above Average (-1) is less friendly to him.
There’s one non-catcher bench spot up for grabs for the Phillies this spring, and because the club values someone who can play both infield and outfield — and there are candidates who offer a bit more offensively — Arroyo is probably on the outside looking in. Assuming he doesn’t win it, though, he’ll still be upper-minors depth for an organization that could certainly use it.
