Shortly after defeating the Washington Nationals Sunday, the Philadelphia Phillies optioned infielder Nick Maton to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies are off Monday, so it’s not clear what the corresponding move will be before Tuesday’s game with the Atlanta Braves, or when it will come.
Of note, Phillies Nation‘s Destiny Lugardo notes that Enyel De Los Santos was at Citizens Bank Park, despite not being on the active roster. It’s possible he’ll take a roster spot, though as many noted, he may have simply been there in case Héctor Neris wasn’t ready to be activated from the paternity leave list.
It’s entirely possible that Scott Kingery – who has been rehabbing with the IronPigs after a stint on the concussion IL – will be activated before Tuesday’s game to take Maton’s roster spot.
The demotion is a disappointing turn of events for Maton, who hit .333 in his first 39 career at-bats in April. Since then, though, the rookie has hit just .206 in 63 at-bats. With the emergence of Ronald Torreyes, this may be an optimal time for Maton, 24, to regroup a bit and get more consistent at-bats in Triple-A. The Phillies could also have Maton, a natural middle infielder, play a bit in the outfield, if they think him playing outfield or being a super-utility player could be his future.
