Didi Gregorius was called upon to pinch-hit for Alec Bohm in the eighth inning of Saturday’s 11-2 win over the Boston Red Sox. It was unusual considering a lefty was on the mound and Bohm was 2-for-3 with a home run.
Joe Girardi said after the game that Bohm was taken out due to COVID-19 protocols. He could not provide any further information.
If the Phillies opt to place him on the COVID-IL, he’ll be the eighth Phillies player to go on the list so far this season. Jose Alvarado, Matt Moore, Ronald Torreyes and Chase Anderson are among the players who have missed significant time this season either due to exposure to COVID-19 or a positive test.
Heading into Saturday’s game, Bohm slashed .305/.376/.381 since June 1. He smashed a two-run home in the second inning to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead on Saturday.
In the event that Bohm misses time, the Phillies have plenty of options to replace him at third. Brad Miller, Luke Williams, Ronald Torreyes and Nick Maton could all see some time at the hot corner if Bohm goes on the IL.
In other injury related news, center fielder Odúbel Herrera has peroneal tendonitis in his left ankle. The hope is that he could be ready to play once he is eligible to come off the injured list on July 20 against the New York Yankees. For now, the Phillies will role with the Williams-Travis Jankowski platoon in center field.
