Dave Dombrowski’s first MLB trade deadline in charge of the Phillies is not off to a great start.
The Seattles Mariners have an agreement to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates left-handed starter Tyler Anderson, per Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Phillies, per multiple reports, had a deal in place to acquire the 31-year-old southpaw, but the deal fell through after the Pirates doctors reportedly expressed concern about the medical reports for Cristian Hernandez, one of the two Low-A minor leaguers included in the original deal.
The Mariners, according to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, are sending two minor leaguers to Pittsburgh. One of them is Double-A catching prospect Carter Bins. The Phillies’ deal included a pitcher (Hernandez) and catcher (Abrahan Gutierrez).
After the initial deal fell through, other teams reportedly began ramping up their interest in Anderson. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia suggested that the New York Mets may have jumped in and offered a more attractive package. Former Phillie Jerad Eickhoff, who was designated for assignment by the Mets twice this year, gave up 10 earned runs for New York in a loss against Atlanta on Tuesday. The Mets and Phillies will surely be competing for starting pitching as the July 30 deadline looms.
Early Tuesday, the Phillies were also heavily linked to Pirates reliever Richard Rodríguez. It wouldn’t be surprising if the fallout from the Anderson negotiations heavily impact the Phillies’ pursuit of Rodríguez. Dombrowski cannot be pleased with Pirates general manager Ben Cherington. The two men have history as Dombrowski succeeded Cherington as Red Sox president of baseball operations.
The Phillies will have to look elsewhere for an arm to stabilize the back end of the rotation.
We’ll have more on this story as additional details become available.
