Philadelphia Phillies minor leaguer Daniel Brito has taken some positive steps after suffering a medical emergency on the field earlier this season, according to the organization.
The Phillies and their Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, made a joint statement on Thursday issuing an update on his progress.
“Earlier this week, Daniel was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Philadelphia,” the teams said. “He has shown progress in his recovery, and while there is still a long road of rehab ahead, his medical staff has marveled at his determination and competitive spirit throughout this process. Daniel’s family asks for privacy as he continues his medical treatments.”
Brito had been hospitalized since collapsing on the field on July 31 in Rochester while playing for the IronPigs. He underwent two surgeries after the emergency.
The 23-year-old joined the Lehigh Valley roster the week prior after a stellar start to the season in Double-A Reading. He originally signed with the Phillies out of Venezuela in 2014.
