The international hot stove is scalding hot.
Former Philadelphia Phillies slugger Justin Bour has signed with the Mexico City Red Devils for the 2022 season.
Now 33, Bour was acquired in a waiver trade from the division-rival Miami Marlins in August of 2018, as the Phillies attempted to reach the postseason for the first time since 2011. Instead, Bour posted just a .643 OPS in 29 games for the Phillies, as the team collapsed in the final six weeks of the season.
Of course, Bour’s presence on the team allowed then-manager Gabe Kapler to put together an infamous lineup that essentially included five first basemen on Sept. 8, 2018:
Prior to 2018, Bour had been a pretty productive player. Between 2015 and 2017, he hit 63 home runs and drove in 207 runs for the Marlins. But after a disappointing finish to 2018 and a disastrous 52-game stint with the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, Bour hasn’t received another opportunity at the major league level.
Wedged in between stints in Japan and South Korea, Bour hit just .213 with six home runs and 17 RBIs in 108 at-bats for the Sacramento River Cats — the Triple-A affiliates of the San Francisco Giants — this past season. Bour was released in June, and ultimately landed with the LG Twins in the KBO. There, Bour’s struggles continued, as he finished with just a .545 OPS in 32 games.
Among those with connections to the Phillies that Bour will now become teammates with in Mexico are RHP JC Ramírez and first baseman Jon Singleton.
