Ronald Torreyes is returning to the Phillies organization for a third consecutive season. He signed a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic.
Torreyes, 29, provided some clutch hits and steady defense all around the infield during his time with the Phillies in 2021. He was a worth a combined +4 outs above average, according to Statcast, at second base, shortstop and third base. If he makes the team, he’ll likely serve as a defensive replacement off the bench.
At times, the Phillies did rely too heavily on Torreyes and it resulted in abysmal offensive production. He posted a .632 OPS in 344 plate appearances in 2021. The hope is that both Alec Bohm and Didi Gregorius bounce back enough that Torreyes wouldn’t have to spend so much time in the starting lineup. Johan Camargo, who signed a major league contract with the Phillies just before the lockout, fills a similar role that Torreyes occupied last season and should be higher than Torreyes on the team’s depth chart.
