As the All-Star break comes to a close, it appears two former Phillies have found new teams.
John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reported on Monday that catcher Andrew Knapp is signing with the San Francisco Giants on a minor-league deal. Knapp will report to Triple-A Sacramento. If he reaches the big leagues, he’ll reunite with former Phillies manager Gabe Kapler.
Outfielder Roman Quinn is signing a major league deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He replaces outfielder Harold Ramirez, who is going on the injured list with a right thumb fracture.
The Rays’ outfield depth has been depleted by injuries. Manuel Margot and Kevin Kiermaier, two possible Phillies trade targets last offseason, are both on the injured list and are not expected to be back in the near future.
Quinn was designated for assignment by the Phillies in November and then signed a minor league deal with the Marlins. He returned to the Phillies shortly after he was informed he wouldn’t make the team in Miami and played in 28 games for the club before being designated for assignment by the Phillies for the second time in a calendar year. He then signed a minor league deal with the Royals, but recently opted out of the contract.
This is the second time this season the Giants have acquired a former Phillies catcher. San Francisco traded for Austin Wynns in June, who was with Triple-A Lehigh Valley at the time. Wynns has played in 26 games in 2022 for San Francisco, posting a .577 OPS.
With catching depth being an issue in San Francisco following the retirement of Buster Posey, the Giants appear to be turning to Knapp to serve as depth. After spending five seasons with the Phillies, the Giants are Knapp’s fourth organization this season. He was designated for assignment by the Seattle Mariners on July 9.
