2022 Postgame Recaps

Nick Castellanos’ clutch homer leads Phils past Braves

Final Score: Phillies 3, Braves 1

Charlie Morton, the starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, cruised through 6 2/3 innings, allowing only three hits to the Philadelphia Phillies. Phillies hitters, for the most part, looked powerless against him.

Zack Wheeler, the starter for Philadelphia, was no less excellent. He gave up only one earned run on an Orlando Arcia homer, but otherwise kept the Braves at bay.

The Phillies turned things around at the plate in the eighth inning. After Rhys Hoskins took a one-out walk, Alec Bohm smoked a liner to left field to put Hoskins on third and Realmuto knocked him in with an RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-1. Nick Castellanos then hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Phillies a 3-1 lead:

Seranthony Domínguez was tasked to keep the game at 3-1 after Wheeler was pulled in the bottom of the eighth inning. He got two outs but also allowed two Braves to reach base. Fortunately, José Alvarado came in and got the final out on one pitch.

David Robertson, in his first appearance coming back to the Phillies after a successful stint in Chicago, got the save with two strikeouts in the ninth inning.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

Zack Wheeler: 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB, 7 K, 90 pitches

Wheeler was excellent Wednesday, making just one mistake the entire day. The Phillies needed him to go deep in this game after the bullpen game on Tuesday. Wheeler put together another Wheeler-type start.

Charlie Morton: 6.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 101 pitches

Morton had no problem against Phillies hitters, limiting the Phillies to just three hits over 6 2/3 innings before the Braves bullpen coughed up the lead.
