Final Score: Marlins 3, Phillies 1
The Philadelphia Phillies will get a good look at three of the best arms in baseball over a four-day stretch, and they managed to steal a win against the first of that trio Wednesday night.
With matchups against Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom looming this weekend in New York, the Phillies didn’t have many answers against National League Cy Young Award front-runner Sandy Alcántara through the first seven innings.
J.J. Bleday — a native of Danville, Pennsylvania — added on an insurance run for the Miami Marlins by doubling off of Andrew Bellatti in the top of the eighth inning to give the Marlins a 3-1 lead. With Alcántara cruising, that seemed to be the dagger.
Instead, Brandon Marsh came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning with runners on first and second, and after failing to lay down a bunt, singled to center field to score Jean Segura:
Having already driven in one of their two runs on the night, Kyle Schwarber added a second RBI on a single into right field that scored Bryson Stott to tie the game:
To his credit, Alcántara then got Hoskins to line out and Marsh was doubled up at third base.
But the Phillies responded with a double from Alec Bohm, which advanced Schwarber to third base. J.T. Realmuto then singled to score Schwarber, giving the Phillies the lead and knocking Alcántara out of the game:
Seranthony Domínguez retired the Marlins in order in the ninth inning, earning his eighth save of the season and helping to secure one of the finer wins of the campaign.
With the victory, the Phillies improve to 62-48, having won seven in a row. Meanwhile, the Marlins don’t have much to show for an incredible individual season from Alcántara, as they are just 49-61.
The Phillies will look to earn a series sweep Thursday afternoon against the Fish, with Kyle Gibson slated to square off with Edward Cabrera in a matinee at Citizens Bank Park.

- Sandy Alcántara perhaps ran out of gas in the eighth inning, ultimately allowing eight hits and four earned runs over 7 2/3 innings. Still, it’s been an incredible season for the 26-year-old, who leads baseball with 166 innings pitched.
- Noah Syndergaard gave up some hard contact, but managed to limit the Marlins to six hits and two earned runs over six innings. The 29-year-old’s ERA now sits at 3.96 on the season.
