It’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep the hype around Andrew Painter, the top prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies system, in check.
However, the 19-year-old righty did show some signs of being mortal Saturday evening, as he allowed a two-run home run in the seventh inning of his second Double-A start:
Nonetheless, it was a strong outing overall for Painter, who struck out six and allowed just four hits over 6 1/3 innings against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, who are the Double-A affiliates of the New York Mets.
On the season, Painter has a minuscule `1.23 ERA in 19 starts across three different levels of the minors.
Earlier this month, Phillies Nation ranked Painter as the No. 1 overall prospect in the organization. But it’s not just locally that the 2021 first-round pick is getting recognized.
MLB Pipeline recently ranked Painter as the No. 25 overall prospect in the sport, a pretty impressive spot to be in as your first full season of professional baseball winds down.
While the Phillies were never a player for Juan Soto, ESPN‘s Kiley McDaniel heard that the Washington Nationals were interested in involving Philadelphia in the sweepstakes in some way — potentially as a third team — because they are that high on Painter.
Painter may not be in play for the Phillies in 2022, but there appears to be a real chance that he makes his Major League Debut before he’s able to have his first legal drink.
