FINAL: Diamondbacks 12, Phillies 3
The Phillies have had a troubled recent history in Arizona, and their struggles continued on Tuesday night. After an ugly loss on Monday at Chase Field, the Phillies were flat once again in the second game of the three-game set.
Leading the disheartening performance on Tuesday was starting pitcher Aaron Nola. The right-hander allowed eight runs and 10 hits in only four innings as the Diamondbacks cruised to a 12-3 victory.
Nola, who tossed a complete-game shutout in his last start, gave up five runs in the second inning. A Rhys Hoskins error added to the Phillies’ misery in the bottom of the frame.
After giving up three more in the fourth inning, Nola was pulled after four innings pitched and eight earned runs, ballooning his season ERA from 3.08 to 3.43.
The Phillies offense was limited to just two hits until the top of the eighth inning. A Garrett Stubbs walk and a single from Matt Vierling set up a three-run homer for Brandon Marsh, his first as a Phillie.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, infielder Nick Maton was summoned to the mound to keep the game at six runs, but he gave up three more before the Phillies went silent in the top of the ninth inning to end the game.

Aaron Nola: 4.0 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 5 K, 83 pitches
The Diamondbacks knocked Nola around all night. He didn’t have his best stuff — or even his second best stuff — on Tuesday. Nola needs a strong bounce back performance in his next start to dispel the “September Nola” narrative.
Zac Gallen: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 7 K, 88 pitches
The South Jersey native had no problem against Phillies hitters as he cruised through seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits. Gallen, 27, is quietly putting up an ace-like season with his 2.53 ERA in 145.2 IP.
