Here are some interesting tidbits about the San Diego Padres this year:
-At 8-10, they’ve scored the least amount of runs in the National League (60) and given up the second fewest (61). Spacious Petco Park likely plays into that, but they always seem to have good arms. Mat Latos is one you’ll see tonight.
-Hat tip to my buddy Dave Murphy of the Daily News – Petco Park now had an 80-foot advertisement down the right field line attached to the foul pole. Taylor Made has created a huge drive that connects with the foul pole. Take a look at it here.
If a ball down the line hits the fake club, it’s a home run. Pretty cool ad.
-Another one of those good arms is Dustin Moseley. He’s given up just four earned runs in over 25 innings this year. The Phillies are (thankfully) not scheduled to see him this weekend.
-If you think you have it bad watching the Phillies offense, think again. San Diego ranks last in the NL in runs, average, and OPS. Not to jinx the Phillies, but if they held the Padres to, say, 4 runs this weekend, it might not be as hard as you think.
-They have just one regular batting over .260 going into tonight’s game; catcher Nick Hundley. He’s batting .339. Orlando Hudson is second on the team at .259. Their six other regular position players are hitting .242, .241, .230, .200, .167, and .154, respectively.
-One of their not-so-youthful arms is Aaron Harang. The former Cincinnati Reds pitcher has been rejuvenated by the cozy confines of Petco. He’s 4-0 with an ERA below two. Now, he hasn’t pitched more than six innings in any of his four starts, but he also hasn’t given up more than two runs in any of them.
