Catcher Logan O’Hoppe — who had been the top position prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies’ system earlier this year — is set to make his Major League Debut Wednesday.
O’Hoppe was with the Los Angeles Angels on their taxi squad Tuesday, but according to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, the Angels plan to promote the catcher and have him start Wednesday.
In some senses, the Angels are throwing a bone to their fans by promoting O’Hoppe in the final week of what’s been a deeply disappointing 68-86 campaign. The Angels will be looking for a new manager this offseason, and the long-term futures of both Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout with the team are very much uncertain. Getting to see O’Hoppe — who MLB Pipeline ranks as the No. 1 overall prospect in the Angels’ system — will be a nice treat before what could be a painful offseason for fans of the team.
Of course, the Angels acquired O’Hoppe back in July from the Phillies for outfielder Brandon Marsh. The thinking was that Marsh had sputtered out in Los Angeles and was blocked in center field by Trout, while O’Hoppe didn’t have an immediate path to playing at the majors in Philadelphia with J.T. Realmuto entrenched behind the plate.
So far, Marsh has been pretty productive as a Phillie, slashing .288/.308/.433 with a .741 OPS. In addition to benefitting from working with hitting coach Kevin Long, Marsh has played pretty well defensively for the Phillies. Still just 24, Marsh can’t become a free agent until after the 2027 season, so it’s possible he’ll solve the issues that the team has had in center field for the better part of the last decade.
Still, O’Hoppe slashed .283/.416/.544 with 26 home runs, 78 RBIs and a .960 OPS at the Double-A level in 2022, splitting his season in the Phillies and Angels’ organizations. Even if Realmuto is the best catcher in baseball right now, if O’Hoppe develops into an above-average major league catcher, that’s a pretty valuable asset to give up.
