Phillies place Alec Bohm on 10-day injured list

NEW YORK — Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 31) with a left hamstring strain. Drew Ellis, who signed with the Phillies in April on a minor league contract, is up with the club.

To make room for Ellis on the 40-man roster, outfielder Cal Stevenson was designated for assignment.

An MRI revealed a mild strain. It’s possible Bohm could be back once the ten days are up.

“We want to take care of it and knock it out,” Thomson said.

The Phillies will run a platoon at first base with Bohm out. Kody Clemens will start against right-handed starters and Ellis will start against lefties.

Ellis has played mostly third base for the Fightin’ Phils and IronPigs, but Thomson said he’s comfortable at first base.

Ellis has a 1.008 OPS in the minor leagues with the Phillies this year. He’s struggled in limited plate appearances in the big leagues. In 100 major league plate appearances, Ellis has a /.141/.270/.212 slash line.

It’s a huge blow to a lineup that has scored only seven runs in the last four games. Bohm leads the team with 37 RBIs and is one of the few players on the roster who has had consistently good at-bats with men on base. The Phillies will need to find that production elsewhere, whether it’s Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber at No. 4 and 5 or Brandon Marsh, who is batting sixth in Thursday’s game.
