Nick Maton breaks Aaron Nola’s no-hit bid in seventh

Aaron Nola’s first start as a 30-year-old man was going really well.

He carried a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings against the Tigers. Former Phillie Nick Maton dramatically broke up the no-hit bid with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh.

The Phillies needed a really good outing out of Nola and they got one. He has 12 strikeouts and was averaging around 93.5 mph with his fastball through six innings. He tied Cole Hamels for third on the all-time Phillies list with 29 double-digit strikeout games.

It’s quite the turnaround for Nola, who came into the game with a 4.93 ERA. He’s been very consistent at eating innings for the Phillies as it was his 10th consecutive outing with six or more innings pitched, but that hasn’t necessarily translated into results on the mound. Through those first nine games of the streak, the Phillies went 5-4 with Nola posting a 4.10 ERA.

The Phillies currently lead the Tigers 5-3. Trea Turner has three RBIs, including two on a pair of solo home runs against Detroit starter Joey Wentz.
