The jury is still out on naming the most impactful player moved at the 2023 trade deadline, but if you’re looking for a way-too-early verdict, look no further than Michael Lorenzen.
That’s at least true if hardware is your metric. Lorenzen earned National League Player of the Week co-honors on Monday, on the strength of his no-hitter Citizens Bank Park debut. Lorenzen, who shared the honor with the Braves’ Matt Olson (.400/.539/.833 with four homers in eight games), is the first 2023 deadline acquisition to win Player of the Week with his new club — for what it’s worth — as well as the first Phillie to win it this year.
Lorenzen’s early Phillies impact has gone beyond the no-no, in which he became just the second pitcher since 1900 to twirl a no-hitter in his home debut with a new team. The Player of the Week time frame doesn’t include his eight-inning, two-run outing against the Marlins in Miami two days after the Phillies traded for Lorenzen on deadline day.
The Phillies didn’t make that trade for Lorenzen to win National League Co-Player of the Week in the second week of August. But until we know how Lorenzen fares in a potential postseason, or how he pitches down the stretch in the Phillies’ quest to get there, one thing is clear, so far: The trade has worked out alright.
