Last offseason, Rhys Hoskins found a new home. After spending his entire professional baseball career in the Phillies organization, the former fifth-round pick agreed to a two-year, $34 million contract with the Brewers in late January. Included in the pact was an opt-out after the first year.
According to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com, Hoskins has exercised his player option for 2025, keeping him in Milwaukee for at least one more season. He’ll make $18 million next year. Hoskins’ contract also includes a mutual option for 2026.
After missing the entire 2023 season because of an ACL tear suffered late in spring training, Hoskins’ time in Philadelphia ended. With Bryce Harper moving to first base on a full-time basis, there was no more room for Hoskins in Philadelphia. He hit the free-agent market looking for a new team.
Hoskins was a key member of the 2022 NL championship club. During that year’s postseason run, he swatted six home runs. The first resulted in Hoskins’ memorable bat spike in Game 3 of the NLDS. He received standing ovations when he returned to South Philly earlier this year. He also homered off Zack Wheeler.
In 2024, Hoskins put together the worst statistical year of his major-league career. He hit .214/.303/.419 with 26 home runs. His OPS+ of 98 meant he was just below a league-average hitter. He then went 0-for-9 in the Wild Card Series last month. He’ll certainly be looking to bounce back in 2025.
