Despite a breakout first half by Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm, his struggles down the stretch and in the postseason could lead Philadelphia to move him before next season. The right-handed hitter is reportedly on the trade block as the team attempts to bounce back from its National League Division Series loss.
Bohm was a productive player in 2024 as he hit .280/.332/.448 with 15 home runs and 44 doubles in 143 games. He started for the NL in the All-Star Game and enjoyed his best full season to date. But the results were not there in the second half, especially after he strained his left hand late in the season. Bohm was later benched for the second game of a short NLDS series in which Bohm displayed an over-aggressive approach and plenty of visible frustration.
Although Bohm has come a long way from earlier in his career, the Phillies will likely look to alter their core to some degree, and the 28-year-old may be the odd man out. Philadelphia could have some different options in making a move. Here’s a list of three mock trades involving Bohm that the Phillies should consider.
1. Alec Bohm to the Royals for Brady Singer
Kansas City has reportedly discussed a trade that would send right-hander Brady Singer to Cincinnati in exchange for second baseman Jonathan India. The Phillies should look to swoop in and offer Bohm as the addition to the Royals’ infield instead.
Singer, 28, had a 3.71 ERA in 179 2/3 innings over 32 starts this past season. He’d be another effective member of Philadelphia’s strong starting rotation, while Bohm would add some authority to Kansas City’s lineup around star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr.
The Royals “have checked in on” Bohm, according to Anne Rogers of MLB.com, and this sort of framework would be a fit. Like Bohm, Singer has two more years under team control. The Phillies could use another starter as prospect Andrew Painter likely eases his way into the rotation in his first year back from Tommy John surgery and as left-hander Ranger Suárez enters his final season under contract.
2. Alec Bohm, Michael Mercado and Starlyn Caba to the Mariners for Bryan Woo
This trade with Seattle may be more of a long shot, but it could come into play depending on how the offseason plays out. FanSided reporter Robert Murray recently connected the Mariners to Bohm on the “Foul Territory” podcast, and he would fit their need for some offensive help in the infield.
This specific deal, however, would probably only come to fruition if Seattle signed free-agent star pitcher Roki Sasaki, who will be posted from Japan.
In this scenario, the Mariners may be willing to part with young starter Bryan Woo, who had a 2.89 ERA in 22 starts in his second season, from their talented and crowded rotation. It would take a big swing from the Phillies, who would send Bohm, an interesting arm in Michael Mercado and 18-year-old shortstop prospect Starlyn Caba for the 24-year-old right-hander.
Even if Seattle won’t trade Woo or another one of its starters, the Mariners could still be a good trade partner on a deal for Bohm.
3. Alec Bohm to the Astros for Ryan Pressly and Jacob Melton
The Astros may have a hole to fill at third base with Alex Bregman hitting free agency, and Bohm could be a potential replacement. This trade would give the Phillies a combination of veteran presence in their bullpen in Ryan Pressly and youth in their outfield core in prospect Jacob Melton.
Pressly, who just had a 3.49 ERA in 59 games at age 35, has one year left on his deal for $14 million. He’d be a reliever the Phillies can utilize in the middle and late innings. Melton, the 24-year-old top prospect in the Astros organization, could bring a boost to the team’s outfield situation in the near future or be used in another trade to help Philadelphia push for a World Series. He was a second-round draft pick in 2022 and hit 15 home runs with 30 stolen bases between Double-A and Triple-A in 2024.
